Permits by state
What ADOT requires before an oversize or overweight load moves on Arizona state highways: legal limits, Class A permits and fees, escorts, night and weekend rules, metro curfews and holiday shutdowns. Sourced from ADOT and Arizona Administrative Code Title 17, Chapter 6.
The numbers
| Dimension | Legal limit (R17-6-102, Table 1) |
|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in (8 ft where restricted under Table 4) |
| Height | 14 ft (13 ft 6 in where restricted under Table 4) |
| Length | Straight truck 40 ft; semitrailer 57 ft 6 in on the National Network, 53 ft (or 65 ft overall if longer) on other state highways; doubles 28 ft 6 in per trailer or 65 ft overall |
| Overhang | 3 ft front, 6 ft rear |
| Weight | 20,000 lb single/steering axle; 80,000 lb overall for five-plus axle combinations (axle groups by A.R.S. 28-1100 formula), or the manufacturer rating if lower |
Exceeding any of these on the State Highway System requires an ADOT special permit.

Permits
Class A permits cover non-reducible loads up to 14 ft wide, 16 ft high, 120 ft long and 250,000 lb, for a single trip, 30 days or a year, on state routes only. City and county roads need local permits (Phoenix has its own). Larger loads (superloads) need a Class C special permit; Table 4 bridges over 250,000 lb need ADOT Bridge Group analysis. Vehicles must be registered for 80,000 lb.
| Permit | Fee per ADOT |
|---|---|
| Oversize, single trip | $15 |
| Oversize, 30 day | $30 |
| Oversize, annual | $360 |
| Oversize/overweight, single trip | $75 |
