Pilot cars

Escort requirements

Idaho ties pilot car requirements to load size and route color on ITD's Pilot/Escort Vehicle Travel Requirements and Vertical Clearance of Structures map. Single-trip permits list escorts on the permit itself.

  • Pilot vehicles are supplied by the permittee: a car or truck no heavier than 16,000 lb, and not towing a trailer.
  • Loads over 16 ft high need a lead pilot with a non-metallic height pole.
  • "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign: 12 in × 5 ft, black 8 in letters on yellow.
The width thresholds for each route color come from ITD's map, and we haven't summarized them here yet. See the map, or run your load through our checker.

When you can roll

Travel times, commuter limits and holidays

  • Commuter restrictions: loads over 13 ft wide can't move during heavy commuter traffic, 6–9 a.m. and 4–6:30 p.m. local time, Mon–Fri, near the listed cities and mileposts, unless the permit says otherwise.
  • Weekends and holidays: on red-coded routes, travel stops at 2 p.m. Friday or the day before a holiday. Interstate and black-route allowances depend on load size.
  • Designated holidays: New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov 26, 2026) and Christmas.
