Oregon Oversize Permits, Pilot Cars & Travel Restrictions

What ODOT requires before an oversize or overweight load moves in Oregon: legal limits, permits, pilot cars, and when you can travel. Sourced from ODOT and Oregon rules.

This is a summary, not legal advice, and permit rules change. Confirm current conditions with the issuing agency, or let us handle it: every load we book is permitted and routed for you.

Permits

ODOT over-dimension permits

Anything over legal size needs an ODOT Commerce and Compliance Division (CCD) permit before the load moves. ODOT issues single-trip and annual over-dimension permits. They can include county roads, and Portland city streets on annual permits only. Tax and registration requirements also apply.

  • For single-trip permits over 14 ft 6 in high, ODOT may require a front pilot with a height pole, or a signed height declaration (form 9930) instead.
  • Road and bridge restrictions, construction, wildfire and weather can all change what a permit allows. Check the Road and Bridge Restrictions List.

Pilot cars

Escort requirements

Oregon sets pilot vehicle requirements by highway, using Route Map 2 (multi-lane, plus Green, Purple and Red two-lane routes) and permit attachments 75A/82A. Highlights from ODOT's pilot car guide:

When you can roll

Travel times and holidays

Time-of-travel rules are set in permit Attachment H (OAR 734-082-0021). ODOT restricts some movements during six holiday periods, plus construction, wildfire and weather events.

Thanksgiving 2026: no movement over 8 ft 6 in wide from noon Wed, Nov 25 until ½ hour before sunrise Mon, Nov 30. Limited exceptions allow daylight travel on certain routes Thursday through Saturday, depending on width. Starting 12:01 a.m. Mon, Nov 30, loads up to 10 ft wide can run at night on Green routes and up to 12 ft on Interstates.
