Nevada Oversize Permits, Pilot Cars & Travel Restrictions

What NDOT requires before an oversize or overweight load moves in Nevada: permit triggers, pilot cars, superloads, and holiday and night rules. Sourced from NDOT and the Nevada Administrative Code.

This is a summary, not legal advice, and permit rules change. Items marked verify with the state could not be confirmed from an official source. Confirm current conditions with the issuing agency, or let us handle it: every load we book is permitted and routed for you.

NDOT over-dimensional (ODV) permits

ODV permits are issued only by NDOT's Carson City office or online. Ports of entry do not issue them. The original signed permit must be carried; copies are not allowed. Permits may carry restricted-route, spring thaw and weight-restricted bridge attachments.

Superloads must be submitted online at least 10 business days before the move: over 17 ft wide on 2-3 lane highways, over 19 ft wide on 4+ lanes, over 18 ft tall (route survey required), over 200 ft long, or over 500,000 lb.

Permit fees: verify with the state.

When you can roll

Holidays, weekends and darkness

NDOT restricts ODV travel around New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, during the high-traffic hours shown in its charts (these may not fall on the holiday itself). Weekend hours run from ½ hour after sunset Friday to ½ hour before sunrise Monday; hours of darkness are ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise. The exact restriction for each width class: verify with the state (see NDOT's holiday charts and your permit).
