Heavy haul in Nevada

Two Very Different Halves of One State

Most Nevada heavy haul runs on two interstates that barely touch each other. I-80 crosses the north from Reno through Winnemucca and Elko to Wendover, and it is the supply line for the gold mines. I-15 cuts across the south corner through Las Vegas between California and Utah, and it carries construction, energy and distribution freight. The rest of the state is long two-lane US highways, US-95 and US-93, with a lot of distance between fuel stops.

I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Nevada load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.

Legal Limits in Nevada

NDOT requires an over-dimensional (ODV) permit for non-divisible loads over any of these:

DimensionNevada legal limitOver that means
Width8 ft 6 inODV permit. Pilot cars start at 12 ft 1 in on two- and three-lane roads.
Height14 ftODV permit. Over 15 ft 6 in needs a front pilot with a clearance pole.
Length70 ftODV permit. Over 110 ft (120 ft with steerable trailers) adds a rear pilot.
Overhang10 ft front or rearODV permit. Over 25 ft adds a pilot on the overhang side.

Permits and escorts

NDOT Permits Come From Carson City

  • Where permits come from. ODV permits are issued only by NDOT's Carson City office or online. Ports of entry do not issue them, and the original signed permit has to ride with the load.
  • Pilot cars. On two- and three-lane roads, 12 ft 1 in to 14 ft wide needs a front pilot; 14 ft 1 in to 16 ft needs front and rear; over 16 ft needs front and rear on every road. In darkness or holiday hours, anything over 12 ft wide needs front and rear.
  • Superloads. Over 17 ft wide on two- or three-lane highways, 19 ft on four lanes, 18 ft tall, 200 ft long or 500,000 lb, submitted online at least 10 business days before the move.
  • Permit fees: verify with the state.

Full detail, fees and holiday dates are in our Nevada oversize permit guide.

Roads

Lanes, Corridors and Chokepoints in Nevada

I-80: Reno to Wendover

The gold-country lane. Reno and Sparks, then Fernley, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Carlin and Elko, then on to Wells and the Utah line. Long, open, and mostly four-lane, which helps on pilot counts. The constraint is distance: plan fuel, staging and overnight parking for wide loads before the permit is issued.

I-15: California to Utah through Las Vegas

The southern lane, shared with every truck running Southern California to Salt Lake. Las Vegas metro traffic is the scheduling problem, so we plan the city segment first.

US-95 and US-93

The north-south links. US-95 runs Las Vegas to Tonopah to Winnemucca and on toward Oregon and Idaho; US-93 runs Las Vegas to Ely to Wells and Twin Falls. These are mostly two-lane, so the stricter two-lane pilot table applies.

Who ships here

Mining Drives Nevada Heavy Haul

  • Gold mining. Nevada was the leading gold-producing state in 2025, about 64% of U.S. production per USGS, and the top state by nonfuel mineral value. Haul trucks, shovels, mill components and crushers are oversize by nature, and most of it moves on I-80.
  • Lithium. The BLM approved the Thacker Pass lithium mine in Humboldt County in January 2021, which brings in plant equipment, tanks and modules.
  • Construction and industrial. Excavators, cranes and steel into Las Vegas and the Reno-Sparks industrial areas, plus equipment rental fleets moving between them.

Why Vector

Moving a Load Into, Out of, or Across Nevada

In Nevada, the planning usually matters more than the permit. A wide load headed to a mine site outside Elko needs pilots lined up, a superload submitted on time if it is big enough, and a clear plan for where it parks at night. That is the part we do before the truck is dispatched.

Typical Nevada move: a mining component 13 ft wide, Sparks to a site near Elko on I-80. ODV permit from NDOT, no daylight pilot on the four-lane interstate at that width, front pilot on any two- or three-lane segment, and a route checked for restrictions before it is quoted.

Questions we get

Frequently Asked

Do I need a permit to haul oversize in Nevada?

Yes, for non-divisible loads over 8 ft 6 in wide, 14 ft high, 70 ft long, 10 ft of front or rear overhang, or 80,000 lb. Permits come from NDOT in Carson City or online, not from ports of entry.

When does a Nevada load need a pilot car?

On two- and three-lane roads, loads 12 ft 1 in to 14 ft wide need a front pilot, and 14 ft 1 in to 16 ft need front and rear. Over 16 ft wide needs front and rear on all roads.

How far ahead do I need to plan a Nevada superload?

NDOT requires superload requests to be submitted online at least 10 business days before the move.

Which Nevada routes carry the most heavy haul?

I-80 between Reno and Wendover, which serves the gold mines around Winnemucca and Elko, and I-15 through Las Vegas. US-95 and US-93 link them north to south.

Can you move mining equipment to a Nevada mine site?
