Heavy haul in Wyoming
Wyoming has three interstates and a lot of open road. I-80 crosses the south from Evanston through Rock Springs, Rawlins, Laramie and Cheyenne, and WYDOT closes stretches of it to light, high-profile vehicles when the wind gets up. I-25 runs north from Cheyenne through Casper to Buffalo, and I-90 crosses the northeast through Gillette and Sundance. Wyoming's permit system is practical, and its legal weights on the interstate are high. The weather is what you plan around.
I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Wyoming load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.
The numbers
All loads over legal size or weight need a permit or permission before traveling on Wyoming highways:
| Dimension | Wyoming legal limit | Over that means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in | Permit. Two-lane: front and rear escorts at 14 ft or more. Interstate: rear escort at 15 ft or more. |
| Height | 14 ft | Permit. Escorts at the approving authority's discretion. |
| Length | 60 ft single unit or semitrailer; 81 ft truck-tractor combinations | Permit. Two-lane escorts at 110 ft; interstate rear escort at 150 ft. |
| Axles | 20,000 lb single, 36,000 lb tandem, 42,000 lb triple | Overweight permit. |
| Gross weight | Interstate up to 117,000 lb by formula; other highways 80,000 lb (Table II) or 117,000 lb by formula | Overweight permit. |

Roads
The main transcontinental lane and the windiest. WYDOT closes segments to light, high-profile vehicles based on gust speed, and a lightly loaded or tall oversize unit is exactly what those closures are for. Build a weather day into tall-load schedules, especially in winter.
North-south through Casper, connecting Colorado's Front Range to Montana via I-90.
Buffalo, Gillette and Sundance. Gillette is the hub for the coal country around it.
Off the interstates, US and state routes are mostly two-lane, so the front-and-rear escort rule at 14 ft wide applies. Structure and route restrictions are set on the permit: verify with the state for your route.

Why Vector
Wyoming is easy to permit and hard to schedule. The right move is usually to clear what you can at the port, keep the load on the interstate, and have a plan for when I-80 closes. We plan for that before the truck rolls.
Typical Wyoming move: a 14 ft wide mine component, Rock Springs to Gillette. Port-of-entry permit (under 18 ft and 160,000 lb), daylight only, front and rear escorts on two-lane segments, and a wind check before departure.

Questions we get
8 ft 6 in wide and 14 ft high. Anything over legal size or weight needs a permit before it travels.
Yes, for loads up to 18 ft wide, 17 ft high, 120 ft long (combination) and 160,000 lb. Larger loads go to the Overweight Loads Office in Cheyenne.
Two escorts on two-lane roads for loads 14 ft wide or more, and one rear escort on interstates for loads 15 ft wide or more.
Yes. WYDOT closes segments of I-80 to light, high-profile vehicles when wind gusts exceed its thresholds, so tall loads need weather built into the schedule.
