Heavy haul in Utah

Everything Funnels Through the Wasatch Front

Utah heavy haul is shaped by geography. I-15 runs the length of the state from St. George to the Idaho line, I-80 comes in from Wendover and climbs out through Parleys Canyon toward Wyoming, I-84 splits off toward Idaho, and I-70 starts at I-15 and runs east to Colorado. Most of those meet in the Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Utah County corridor, which is exactly where UDOT's rush-hour curfew applies.

I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Utah load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.

Roads

Lanes, Corridors and Chokepoints in Utah

I-15: St. George to Idaho

The spine. Southern Utah is open; from Utah County north through Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties, the curfew sets your schedule.

I-80: Wendover to Wyoming

Flat across the salt flats, then Salt Lake, then a steep climb up Parleys Canyon and on through Echo toward Evanston.

I-70: Cove Fort to Colorado

Starts at I-15 and runs east through very remote country to Green River and Grand Junction, Colorado. Plan fuel and staging carefully on long wide-load days.

I-84 and US-6

I-84 links Ogden to Idaho and Echo to I-80. US-6 over Soldier Summit connects Spanish Fork to Price and eastern Utah, and is a two-lane route with secondary-highway escort rules.

Who ships here

Mining, Industrial Growth and Distribution

  • Mining. Copper and gold are among Utah's leading mineral commodities, and USGS ranks Utah seventh in nonfuel mineral value. Mine equipment, mill parts and haul-truck components are classic oversize loads.
  • Industrial build-out. The Utah Inland Port Authority's Northwest Quadrant covers roughly 16,000 acres near I-15, I-80, rail lines and the Salt Lake City airport, aimed at advanced manufacturing, aerospace and distribution. That means transformers, switchgear, tanks and steel.
  • Construction and rental fleets. Excavators, dozers and cranes up and down the Wasatch Front and into St. George.

Why Vector

Moving a Load Into, Out of, or Across Utah

Utah rewards planning. A load that hits Salt Lake at 3:45 PM sits until 6. A superload submitted late waits up to two weeks. We build Utah schedules backward from the curfew and the permit lead time, so your load arrives when the crane does.

Typical Utah move: an 11 ft wide excavator, Salt Lake City to St. George on I-15. UDOT single-trip permit, no pilot at that width on the divided interstate, and a departure timed to clear the Wasatch Front curfew.
