Heavy haul in New Mexico

Oilfield Freight and Long Desert Crossings

New Mexico has three interstates that matter for heavy haul: I-40 across the middle through Gallup, Albuquerque and Tucumcari; I-25 north-south from Raton through Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Las Cruces; and I-10 across the south through Las Cruces and Lordsburg. The heaviest demand is in the southeast corner, where the Permian Basin crosses into Lea and Eddy counties. Those oilfield roads are mostly two-lane, and New Mexico's escort and daylight rules apply the whole way.

I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a New Mexico load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.

Permits and escorts

NMDOT Special Permits and Certified Escorts

  • Apply online through NMDOT ePermitting. Annual special permits (other than manufactured homes) are $250 and can include weight up to 140,000 lb. Single-trip fees: verify with the state.
  • Escorts. Required at 14 ft wide or more (and below 14 ft on some routes per NMDOT's escort map), over 90 ft long, and front and rear over 110 ft long or at 18 ft wide on two-lane highways. A police escort is required at 20 ft wide or more. Any escort must be certified by NMDOT or DPS before entering the state.
  • Daylight only. Unless the permit allows continuous movement, no movement from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
  • Superloads of 200,000 lb and above have a separate NMDOT process: verify with the state.

Roads

Lanes, Corridors and Chokepoints in New Mexico

I-40: Arizona to Texas

Gallup, Albuquerque, Santa Rosa and Tucumcari. A long, mostly open lane, and the main east-west crossing for loads coming off the Texas Panhandle or out of Southern California.

I-25: Colorado to Las Cruces

Raton Pass, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Socorro and Las Cruces, meeting I-10 near the Texas line.

I-10 and the Permian connectors

I-10 crosses the south through Las Cruces. Oilfield loads into Lea and Eddy counties usually leave the interstate for two-lane US and state routes around Hobbs, Carlsbad and Artesia, so escort and daylight rules drive the schedule.

Who ships here

The Permian Basin, Copper and Potash

  • Oil and gas. New Mexico is the second-largest crude oil producing state, per EIA, and EIA reported that horizontal wells in Lea and Eddy counties alone accounted for 29% of Permian Basin crude output in early 2023. Drilling rigs, frac equipment, tanks, compressors and processing modules are constant oversize freight.
  • Mining. USGS lists New Mexico among copper-mining states and reports that most U.S. potash comes from southeastern New Mexico. Mill parts and mining equipment move to both.
  • Construction and energy. Excavators, cranes, transformers and wind and solar components across the state.

Why Vector

Moving a Load Into, Out of, or Across New Mexico

New Mexico loads go wrong on the escort, not the permit. The escort has to be NMDOT or DPS certified before it crosses the line, and the move stops at sunset. We line up certified escorts and plan the day so the load is parked before dark, not stuck on a two-lane outside Hobbs.

Typical New Mexico move: a 14 ft wide production vessel, Odessa, TX to a site near Hobbs. NMDOT special permit, a certified escort at 14 ft, daylight-only movement, and a route checked for the escort map.
