Heavy haul in Nebraska

I-80 and the Plains

Nebraska heavy haul is mostly an I-80 story. The interstate runs the length of the state from Omaha through Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte to the Wyoming line, and it is the main east-west lane for oversize freight moving between the West and the Midwest. Off I-80, US-81, US-281, US-83 and US-385 run north-south to ethanol plants, grain operations and wind projects. Nebraska's rules are straightforward, but escorts start at 12 ft wide, moves are daylight-only, and the holiday schedule is longer than most states'.

I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Nebraska load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.

NDOT Over-Dimensional Permits

  • Who issues. NDOT issues permits for state highways; county roads are permitted by the county. The NDOT Permits Office is at 402-471-0034, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday to Friday. Fees and superload thresholds: verify with the state.
  • Escorts. One escort at 12 to 16 ft wide or 125 to 150 ft long; two (front and rear) over 16 ft wide. Escorts may be required over 8 ft 6 in wide, 90 ft long or 14 ft 6 in high. The escort runs in front on undivided highways and behind on divided highways, within 300 ft.
  • Daylight only. Over-dimensional moves run 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and not on holidays, unless the permit says otherwise. Overweight-only permits are valid 24/7.
  • Thanksgiving 2026: restricted from noon Nov 25 until sunrise Nov 30. Christmas 2026: noon Dec 24 until sunrise Dec 26.

Full detail, fees and holiday dates are in our Nebraska oversize permit guide.

Roads

Lanes, Corridors and Chokepoints in Nebraska

I-80: Omaha to Wyoming

Omaha, Lincoln, York, Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, Ogallala and Sidney. Four-lane divided the whole way, so the escort rides behind the load. Daylight-only rules make the long Nebraska stretch a two-day trip for many wide loads, so overnight parking matters.

North-south US routes

US-81 (York to Norfolk), US-281 (Grand Island north and south), US-83 (North Platte) and US-385 in the Panhandle reach ethanol plants, grain elevators and wind sites. These are mostly two-lane, so the escort rides in front.

Who ships here

Ethanol, Wind and Agriculture

  • Ethanol. Nebraska ranks second in U.S. fuel ethanol production capacity, per EIA. Fermenters, tanks, distillation columns and dryers are classic oversize loads.
  • Wind. Nebraska generated about 6.7 million MWh from wind in the first seven months of 2026, per EIA's Electric Power Monthly.
  • Agriculture. Combines, center-pivot components, grain bins and dryers moving to dealers and farms statewide.

Why Vector

Moving a Load Into, Out of, or Across Nebraska

Nebraska's escort trigger is lower than many neighbors', at 12 ft wide, and the holiday shutdown runs longer. We plan Nebraska legs so a load is not stuck at a truck stop in North Platte over Thanksgiving weekend, and we book the escort before the permit, not after.

Typical Nebraska move: a 13 ft wide ethanol tank, Omaha to a plant near Kearney. NDOT permit, one escort (behind the load on I-80, in front on two-lane), daylight-only movement, and a check against the NDOT holiday schedule.
