Heavy haul in South Dakota
South Dakota is one of the simpler states to move oversize freight through. I-90 crosses from Sioux Falls through Mitchell, Chamberlain and Rapid City to Spearfish and Wyoming. I-29 runs north-south along the eastern edge from Sioux City through Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown to North Dakota. South Dakota has no weekend or holiday restrictions, and escorts are not required until a load is wider than 16 ft on the Interstate. The exception is the Black Hills, where SDDOT's Rapid City Region reviews many single-trip permits.
I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a South Dakota load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.
The numbers
Over these needs a South Dakota single-trip permit:
| Dimension | South Dakota legal limit | Over that means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in (102 in) | Permit. Escort wider than 16 ft on Interstates or 20 ft on state highways. |
| Height | 14 ft | Permit. Over 14 ft 6 in limits night movement on the Interstate. |
| Length | Per handbook Table 7; verify with the state | Permit. Black Hills review over 110 ft. |
| Overhang | 3 ft front, 4 ft rear | Permit. |
| Gross weight | verify with the state | Overweight permit. |

Roads
Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Chamberlain (crossing the Missouri River), Wall, Rapid City and Spearfish. Long and four-lane, so most loads under 16 ft run without escorts.
Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown, the main lane for ag equipment and eastern wind projects.
US-16, US-385 and the roads around Rapid City, Lead and Custer are mountainous two-lane routes with special restrictions. Plan extra time for Rapid City Region approval.

Why Vector
South Dakota rewards loads that stay on the Interstate. Under 16 ft wide there, you usually skip the escort, and you can roll on a holiday weekend when neighboring states are shut down. We use that to make up time on multi-state moves, and we plan Black Hills deliveries around the regional approval.
Typical South Dakota move: a 14 ft wide wind component, Sioux Falls to a project west of Mitchell on I-90. SDHP single-trip permit, no escort at that width on the Interstate, daytime movement, and no holiday shutdown to plan around.
