Heavy haul in Oklahoma
Oklahoma sits where three major interstates cross. I-35 runs north-south from Kansas through Oklahoma City to Texas. I-40 crosses east-west through Oklahoma City, from Arkansas to the Texas Panhandle. I-44 runs diagonally from Missouri through Tulsa and Oklahoma City to Lawton and Wichita Falls. And at Catoosa, near Tulsa, the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System lets project cargo arrive by barge. Oklahoma's escort trigger starts at 12 ft wide, lower than some neighbors', and tall loads need utility and railroad coordination.
I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Oklahoma load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.
The numbers
Over these needs an ODOT size and weight permit:
| Dimension | Oklahoma legal limit | Over that means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in (102 in) | Permit. Escort over 12 ft. |
| Height | 14 ft on state, U.S. and Interstate highways; 13 ft 6 in on county roads | Permit. At 15 ft 9 in, front and rear escorts plus utility and railroad notice. |
| Length | Per 47 O.S. 14-103; verify with the state | Permit. |
| Gross weight | verify with the state | Overweight permit. |

Roads
Through Perry, Oklahoma City, Norman and Ardmore. The main lane for loads moving between the Upper Midwest and Texas.
Fort Smith to Oklahoma City to Elk City and on to Amarillo. Wind and oilfield equipment use the western half heavily.
Joplin to Tulsa to Oklahoma City to Lawton. The Tulsa Port of Catoosa sits at the head of navigation on the McClellan-Kerr system, with a 200-ton bridge crane and a Ro/Ro Low Water Wharf for oversize project cargo, so barge-to-truck transload is a real option for very heavy pieces.

Why Vector
In Oklahoma the escort count changes at 12, 14 and 16 ft, and the answer depends on whether the road is two-lane or multi-lane. Tall loads add utility and railroad coordination that takes time. We sort both out before we quote, and we look at the Tulsa Port for pieces that are better off on a barge.
Typical Oklahoma move: a 13 ft wide transformer, Tulsa Port of Catoosa to a substation near Oklahoma City. OkiePROS permit, rear escort on I-44 multi-lane, front escort on any two-lane segment, and departure timed around restricted hours.
