Heavy haul in Kansas
Kansas sits in the middle of a lot of cross-country oversize routes. I-70 crosses from Kansas City through Topeka, Salina and Hays to Colorado. I-35 runs from Kansas City southwest through Emporia and Wichita to Oklahoma, and I-135 links Wichita north to Salina. US-54 and US-400 cross the south. The rules are among the more workable in the region: escorts are not required below 14 ft wide, four-lane roads often need none, and carriers may move every day of the year, including holidays.
I drove trucks before I ever brokered a load, I have spent more than 15 years in freight, and I have pulled oversize permits myself. So when a Kansas load comes in, I am not reading the rules for the first time. I am looking for the part of the move that will actually bite: the escort trigger you are an inch over, the curfew that eats your window, the structure that cannot take the weight. Every load runs on CRST's asset-based network, with CRST's authority, insurance and compliance behind it, and one person accountable for it: me.
The numbers
Over these needs a KDOT special permit through K-TRIPS:
| Dimension | Kansas legal limit | Over that means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 8 ft 6 in | Permit. Escorts over 14 ft on roads with fewer than four lanes. |
| Height | 14 ft | Permit. |
| Length | Per K.S.A. 8-1904; verify with the state | Permit. |
| Gross weight | verify with the state | Overweight permit; overweight-only loads may move at night. |

Roads
Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka, Junction City, Salina, Hays and Goodland. Four-lane across the state, which keeps most loads under 14 ft wide escort-free.
The north-south spine, linking the Kansas City metro and Wichita, then on to Oklahoma City. Metro time limits apply at both ends.
East-west routes across southern and western Kansas to wind projects, feedlots and grain operations. Many segments are two-lane, so escorts start at 14 ft.

Why Vector
Kansas is often where we make up time on a long move: holiday travel allowed, no escort under 14 ft, and four-lane interstates across the state. The catches are the metro windows in Kansas City and Wichita and the turnpike, and we plan around both before quoting.
Typical Kansas move: a 13 ft wide aerospace fixture, Wichita to Kansas City on I-35. K-TRIPS permit, no escort at that width, daylight travel, and departure timed around metro restrictions.

Questions we get
8 ft 6 in wide and 14 ft high.
Over 14 ft wide on roads with fewer than four lanes, front and rear (the rear may be replaced by warning lights except for superloads). On four or more lanes, only superloads and large structures need a rear escort.
Yes. Kansas allows carriers to move every day of the year, including holidays, during daylight hours.
Restrictions of 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6:30 PM may apply around Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita and other listed cities. Check the permit.
