Wyoming Oversize Permits, Pilot Cars & Travel Restrictions

What the Wyoming Highway Patrol and WYDOT require before an oversize or overweight load moves in Wyoming: legal limits, permits and fees, escorts, and holiday rules. Sourced from WHP and WYDOT rules.

This is a summary, not legal advice, and permit rules change. Items marked verify with the state could not be confirmed from an official source. Confirm current conditions with the issuing agency, or let us handle it: every load we book is permitted and routed for you.

When you can roll

Travel times and holidays

Oversize moves are generally daylight only. Exceptions (legal height, properly permitted, signed and lit): single units 60-75 ft, combinations under 100 ft, and loads up to 10 ft wide on interstates.

Holidays: moves requiring escorts may not run on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (Thanksgiving Day only) or Christmas, from ½ hour after sunset the evening before until ½ hour before sunrise the day after. Three-day weekends extend that over the whole weekend; Saturday and Sunday holidays have their own windows.

Check route-specific limits (for example the Wind River Canyon tunnels on US 20/WY 789) on WYDOT's Size/Weight Restrictions Summary.
