Heavy Haul FAQ · Sourced from state DOTs
How many pilot vehicles ODOT requires by width, length, height and overhang, straight from the Route Map 2 Legend (Jan 7, 2026).
Last verified: against official state sources.
Short answer
In Oregon, the number of pilot vehicles depends on the load's width and the route color on ODOT Route Map 2: on Interstates and multilane highways no pilot is needed until over 14 ft wide, while some two-lane Red routes need a pilot from 8 ft 7 in. Over 14 ft 6 in high, a front pilot with a height pole is required unless a liability declaration is on file with ODOT.
Width
Columns are the route types on ODOT Route Map 2. Red routes are further split by Group Map 1 (Black, Blue, Red).
| Width | Interstate / multilane | Green routes | Purple routes | Red: Map 1 Black | Red: Map 1 Blue | Red: Map 1 Red |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft 7 in to 9 ft | None | None | None | None | One | Two |
| 9 ft 1 in to 11 ft | None | None | One | One | One | Two |
| 11 ft 1 in to 12 ft | None | None | One | Two | Two | Two |
| 12 ft 1 in to 14 ft | None | One | Two | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit |
| 14 ft 1 in to 16 ft | One | Two | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit |
| More than 16 ft | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit | Specified on permit |
When one pilot is required it travels in front of the load, except on multilane highways, where it runs at the rear. When two are required, one is in front and one at the rear. If the permit specifies a different number, the permit takes precedence.

From the broker
I am based in Oregon, and Route Map 2 is the first thing I check on an Oregon quote. A 12 ft load on I-84 runs without a pilot; the same load on a Map 1 Red two-lane needs two. See our Oregon heavy haul page and Oregon permit guide for curfews and holidays.

Questions we get
It depends on width and route. On Interstates and multilane highways, one pilot is required from 14 ft 1 in to 16 ft wide. On Map 1 Red two-lane routes, two pilots are required from 8 ft 7 in.
A single pilot travels in front, except on multilane highways, where it travels at the rear. With two pilots, one is in front and one at the rear.
Over 14 ft 6 in high, one front pilot with a height pole is required, unless a liability declaration is on file with ODOT CCD.
On two-lane state highways, one pilot from 95 ft 1 in; on Green routes from 110 ft 1 in. On multilane, one rear pilot from 120 ft 1 in to 150 ft. Over 150 ft is specified on the permit.
The permit takes precedence over the Route Map 2 chart.
